A Pleasure To Burn: Are You In?

Kajang Hot spicy soup
Two famous restaurants selling hot spicy soup in Kajang.

After a long afternoon spent exploring the quaint Kajang Town, you must be all weary and hungry. Worry not as Kajang spicy hot soup aka Lat Tong in Cantonese awaits the rumbling tummies of all capsaiciphiles (the spicy food lovers). While half the world doesn’t get it, nothing makes us more Malaysian than our love for spicy delicacies.

Imagine taking a sip of the soup, the pungent smell and the peppery smack travel down the throat to your tummy. Not only will it warm your tummy up, but it also promises a soothing effect. Are you ready for some good sweat?

In the line-up of spicy hot soup spots in Kajang, you will find two old favourites that many Kajang folks visit, videlicet Restoran Siaw Kwee and Restoran Kee V. Both serve up hearty meals that you wouldn’t want to miss.

Restoran Siaw Kwee (萧家辣汤 Xiāo jiā là tāng)

Mention spicy hot soup and Restoran Siaw Kwee comes to mind. In fact, Sungai Chua is the place of origin for this gourmet meal and Restoran Siaw Kwee is the pioneer in this niche.

Formerly known as Restoran Siaw Kah, it has been in business since thirty years ago whereby the customers were mainly the Chinese rubber tapping workers. Most if not all of them often claimed to be suffering from backaches and muscle soreness. To help them relieve the pain, the Siaw Family introduced the remedy of spicy hot soup which is beneficial to the body and brain.

A pot of flavourful spicy soup with a generous portion of ginger slices, pepper, and preserved vegetables that has all kinds of ingredients in it such as pork belly, pork intestines, liver, kidney and even Kampung chicken meat. Ahhh, where shall we begin with?

Not to mention the other signature dishes that are equally mouthwatering, namely the clay pot spicy pork belly with dried shrimp (火爆肉 huǒ bào ròu), steamed pork belly with yam (芋头扣肉 yù tou kòu ròu), chicken with rice wine (花雕鸡 huā diāo jī) and of course their homemade crunchy pork spring roll (自制春卷 zì zhì chūn juàn).

Restoran Kee V (卫记辣汤之家 Wèi jì là tāng zhī jiā)

Though many might visit Siaw Kwee, Restoran Kee V has its own ardent supporters too. With nearly twenty years of experience, Restoran Kee V does its spicy hot soup differently. In addition to the usual ingredients of making a spicy hot soup, enoki mushrooms can be included, hence a milder spiciness, which is great for everyone to savour.

You may also order up their version of spicy meat (火爆肉 huǒ bào ròu) that has the salted fish in place of dried shrimp. Served piping hot in a clay pot, the aroma of the pork belly is definitely evocative and punchy. Materialise that heaven in your mouth by glazing your rice with the black sauce and letting the salted fish taste melts on your tongue.

Besides, Restoran Kee V also serves delish clay pot chicken with wine. The infusion of the Chinese rice wine, called Hua Tiao (花雕酒 huā diāo jiǔ), blended well with the black sauce, making it really fragrant and gastronomic.

The Great Battle

Longing for something soupy that could warm you up and spicy at the same time? Head over to Restoran Siaw Kwee to satisfy your long overdue spicy soup cravings. While both restaurants leave an indelible impression, selecting the winner between Siaw Kwee and Kee V really comes down to personal preferences. Perhaps, you can tell us which you prefer more after trying them.
